2 Sunny Saturday Sport days in CT

Saturday 16 Oct, with the kids from Oranjekloof School in Hout Bay Volunteers Direct took part in a full day Under 14, 7 a side football competition (which we should have won !) at the German School , which has great views of Cape Town city centre, Table Bay and Table Mountain.

After going through the league section without a loss, and playing with their usual skill, we were looking good for at least a final place but lack of big match temperament got the better of the boys during the quarter final match. With 80% of the game and 1/2 dozen chances we couldn’t convert, we had to go through to a penalty shoot out – not one of our four spot kick takers could hit the target of the small size goals and our opponents managed to fluke a goal off the post and off the back of Apie, our goal keeper.

So, a disappointing return to the township in Hout Bay with no prizes and long faces.

Last Saturday a multi-sports tournament known as “Spring Tide” was held on the palm fringed beach of Camps Bay, 5 minutes from Cape Town centre.

Surfing (big waves made for thrilling rides ), skateboarding, beach soccer, and volleyball competitions were held throughout the day to the music of live rock bands, watched by over 2,000 spectators.

Thanks to the enthusiasm and coaching of Dominique, our Belgian ex-international volleyball player, the Under 16 Boys and Girls teams both came second in their respective tournaments.

A great day enjoyed by all in sublime setting, with the back of Table Mountain on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

Note: Dominique volunteered a year ago with Volunteers Direct at Oranjekloof School in Imizano Yethu township. She helped in the classrooms, and started to teach the pupils volleyball.

She has decided to take a GAP Break and will be here for 8 months teaching volleyball in 5 disadvated junior schools in and around Cape Town.  She hopes to start a small league for these schools.

If anyone would like to come to Cape Town to assist Dominique this summer please contact us for more details.

Likewise if you would like to spend afternoons coaching football and netball (in our winter), to these talented kids, please contact us.
