Its summer in Cape Town and volunteers have so many options on what to do on the weekend that it’s sometimes hard to choose.
On Friday night there were 3 major sporting events in the city. It was the start of the local Pro20 cricket series at Newlands, the first Stormers rugby match of the 2011 season against their old rivals from the North, the Lions and 2 PSL Soccer matches at the new Cape Town Stadium. Both the Stormers and Ajax CT won. Prices for all these events were between R10 – R70
It was such a beautiful still evening that the volunteers took the sunset trip up Table Mountain and came whooshing down in the cable car in the dark which feels as if you are flying over the city
On Saturday one of the biggest horse racing events in South Africa, the J&B Metropolitan Handicap was held at Kenilworth racecourse which is close to the Girls Home. This is the top glamour and glitz event of summer. There are lots of pre and post race parties at the clubs in town and celebs from all over SA attend.
It’s also the start of the harvesting season on wine farms and you can spend the day picking grapes and stomping on them which leaves you covered in sticky juice and smelling a bit odd.
The V & A Waterfront hosted Southern Ink the 3rd International Tattoo Convention. Cape Town has some of the top tattoo artists in the world. One of our past volunteers had a tattoo especially designed for her which took over a week to complete
There are lots of outdoor music venues around the city. The most popular is Kirstenbosh Gardens. This past Sunday Lira and Crazy White boy performed. Having a picnic, while listening to great music, is the prefect end to a busy weekend.
