Following on from her one month visit to volunteer in Cape Town a year ago, Dominique Do Ro, a former Belgian international volleyball player, has returned for an 8 month stint.
She became so engrossed in the lives of the township youth in Cape Town, on her last visit, that she found it difficult to settle in Europe and was determined to return. Her project is to continue coaching the kids of Imizano Yetho in Hout Bay and also 4 other underprivileged schools around central Cape Town.
To do this she has, generously, been given an 8 month sabbatical by her company in Europe, collected volleyball kit and funding, and recruited several other volleyball players from Belgium and the Netherlands.
The aim is to leave a lasting legacy by enthusing teachers to continue the sport when she has gone back home
Dominique is astounded by the inherent skill of the kids and by early next year we hope to have a Volleyball tournament involving the schools that are being coached in her project.
On her first weekend back with us we took a boys and girls team from Oranjekloof Primary School in Hout Bay to a small informal tournament and these 2 teams were the most successful, each side losing only one game. We also had two “ Man of the Match” awards. The recipient of the boy’s award was our old favourite – Thabani!
