Summer in Cape Town and time to go swimming

Summer has arrived in Cape Town and thanks to Llandudno Surf Lifesaving Club, Volunteers Direct continues with our weekly swimming project for the kids of Imizano Yethu Township in Hout Bay.

Cape Town is surrounded by beautiful beaches, including Hout Bay and it is vital that all children learn to swim and have confidence in the water.

The swimming lessons started 3 years ago with the help from swim instructor Juliette Ball. We meet every Thursday afternoon, throughout the summer until Easter, from 1600 to 1800 at the Kronendal Primary School pool.

Volunteers Direct has taught over 50 kids to swim proficiently over the past 3 years. Many started with a fear of deep water, clutching onto the side of the pool. They can now be seen swimming half a dozen lengths and more.

The idea is that the keen swimmers join Llandudno Surf Lifesaving Club, and we currently have a couple of the children training on the beach, with the club, every Sunday morning. Two years ago one of the boys from the township Gift, took part in the Lifesaving National Championships in Durban.

Sponsors have donated 30 sets of girls and boys bathing costumes to this project and we have been given 3 surfboards and 3 bodyboards so that the kids can enjoy their time on the beach during the long hot summer.

Two of the boys, Bopo and Sean, are now surfing regularly down at Hout Bay beach.
