Volunteers Direct Sport Project Score Card 2012

Volunteers Direct offers the most exciting and diverse Sports Project  in Cape Town.

Lulu with U17 Team mates

Lulu & U17 Team mates

SOCCER is the main sport played by township boys. With the volunteers we manage the Under 11 and Under 13 teams at the township primary school. We coach at 4 additional underprivileged primary schools and organise matches between schools. The skill level in soccer is high, and after taking several boys to trials at Ajax Cape Town 5 years ago, one of our successful trainees, Lulu, is now playing mid field at Under 17 level for the club and stands a great chance of making the big time. With Ajax Cape Town he has already toured to Amsterdam, and China where he played against Boca Juniors, Manchester United, Celtic, Inter Milan Under 15s.

Volleyball Project

VOLLEYBALL is played all year round with our volunteer coaches training both girls and boys at 5 disadvantaged schools in and around Cape Town.

Thanks to the volleyball coaching and after extensive trials, we have had a 13 year boy and girl enrolled at the Western Cape Sports School this past year. This is a full boarding academy concentrating on sports and academics. The lives of these 2 teenagers have been irrevocably changed for the better. Of a 7 kids who undertook trails at the beginning of November we hope to enrol at least 4 more volleyball players into this Sport School for 2013.

Kick Kick Kick

SWIMMING. Over the past 5 years we have taught at least 80 kids from the Township Primary School to swim through our volunteer sports project. Lessons take place in Hout Bay from early October to mid April. This project has now progressed to where we are training senior Township High School students to coach the juniors, with the idea that they can earn an income as swimming instructors and lifesavers in the future. There is a shortage of swimming instructors in Cape Town where swimming is an essential life skill as the city is surrounded by 2 oceans.

Introducing Hockey

HOCKEY.  Through our enthusiastic Sports Volunteers we recently introduced hockey to both the kids in Imizano Yetho township in Hout Bay and several other Primary schools in poorer communities close to Cape Town. The interest from both the girls and boys was fantastic and we will continue hockey coaching as part of our Sports Project .

This past year the Sports Volunteer Project has included coaching athletics at the township school at the beginning of the school year and NETBALL for the girls  during our winter.

2012 has seen great growth and development in the Spots Project with Volleyball and Swimming going from strength to strength and providing opportunities for the future for the township youth. Introducing hockey has provided an additional sport for both boys and girls.

Happy Hearts Soccer Team

We continue to nurture the soccer talent and are happy to see an increase in junior girl’s teams. We will continue to follow Lulus progress with interest.

Volunteer with us in 2013 and contribute to the continued success of this exciting Sport Project in Cape Town
